Hot Chocolate
Luis is a janitor that works in the office that I currently temp at. He smiles at all the ladies and gives them compliments. He jokes around with the men and trades sports stories. Sometimes in the midst of conversation, my co-workers forget he has a job to do, let alone their own work. I, on the other hand, keep at my pace, even when Luis visits my side of the cubicle.
“Hola, Francine.” He pronounces my name Fran-See-Ne. I just smile it off, telling him good morning.
“Good to see you back,” he continues.
“Uh-huh,” I mumble, typing in data, my eyes only looking at the paperwork and computer screen.
“Ya think they would have a hired you full time by now.”
“Cheaper to keep me as a temp,” I said.
“Well one of these days, they will a say, hey you know, let’s hire Francine, she works a real hard, we should get her before another company gets her.”
“I’m just another paper pusher, nothing special.”
“Nah, don’t knock yourself down like a that. I’ve seen ya work hard. They keep calling you back, am I right?”
“True, but there’s always another one behind me.”
He leaned on the cubicle wall. “Well you know, if you find a nice, rich boyfriend, you don’t have to work.” He chuckled.
I laughed. “If there was such a thing, I’d like to see him.”
“Who knows, maybe someday, right?”
I yawned, turning some pages.
“Say, have you had your coffee today?”
“Don’t drink coffee, remember.”
“Ah, that’s a right, hot chocolate.”
“I forgot my packet today.”
“I’ll see what I can find.” He muttered, walking away.
I continued to work on the data, inputting, adding, subtracting, and reporting. At about 10, I take a break to stretch my legs and snack on either cereal or a health bar. When I returned to my cubicle, there was a packet of hot chocolate on my desk.
I looked around to see who left it behind. Luis was across the room. As I looked at him, he waved and smiled. I looked back down at my desk. Nah, he couldn’t have. I looked back up to him, but he was gone, probably taking care of some business.
